Christina joined as Treasurer in 2017, after working for the charity for two years. She has extensive knowledge of the charity sector and grants having spent 11 years as Head of Grants at CDCF. Her previous background is as an international humanitarian, including 4 years in Bosnia and Kosovo. She is also the MD of the Enterprise.
James joined Veterans at Ease in 2019 as our Office Manager. Having served in HM Armed Forces within the Royal Highland Fusiliers, he is very aware of the issues faced by our serving and veteran community. James brings a wealth of experience for his role, both within the retail sector and office-based support. He acts as Deputy for Christina whenever required and is a valued member of the Senior Management Team.
Melanie (Mel) joined Veterans at Ease in 2022 as Manager at our Byker shop. She was quickly promoted to Head of Retail and is responsible for providing support and guidance to our Shop Managers, as well as overseeing our Collections and Deliveries Service and managing our Logistics Team. Professor Sir John Burn obtained a first-class honours degree in human genetics and an MD with distinction from Newcastle University, where he has been Professor of Clinical Genetics since 1991. He was appointed as a consultant specialist in Newcastle in 1984 and led the regional NHS Genetics Service for 20 years.
He helped to create the Millennium landmark Centre for Life, which houses an education, and science centre alongside NHS regional genetics and fertility services and University research. He is chair of the Newcastle based DNA device company QuantuMDx Ltd. He was knighted in 2010 and chosen as one of the first 20 ‘local heroes’ to have a brass plaque on Newcastle Quayside in 2014. He is a Trustee of the European Hereditary Tumour Group, UNESCO NGO Global Variome and HUGO (the Human Genome Organisation) London.
Former roles include founding Chair the UK Cancer Genetics Group (1997-2003) and of the International Society for Gastrointestinal Hereditary Tumours (InSiGHT 2003-5), President of the European Society of Human Genetics (2006-2007), Chair of the British Society for Genetic Medicine (2011-2013), Lead Clinician, Northern Strategic Health Authority (2010-2014), Non-executive Director NHS England (2014-2018) and Chair of Newcastle Hospitals (2017 -2023).
He leads the Cancer Prevention Programme research group at Newcastle University; CAPP2, an RCT in 16 countries, showed that aspirin reduces by half the risk of colorectal cancer in Lynch syndrome (Burn et al Lancet 2020) and resistant starch supplements reduce the risk of other LS cancers by more than half (Mathers et al Cancer Prev res 2022). CaPP3, a dose non-inferiority trial of cancer prevention with aspirin in 5 countries ends in summer 2024.
He is also a Patron of the charity Veterans at Ease a military mental health charity.

Brig Ben Banerjee QVRM DL VR RAMC completed his schooling at Newcastle Royal Grammar having served with the Combined Cadet Force for 5 years finishing as the Company Sergeant Major. He then attended Newcastle University Medical School joining 201(Northern) Field Hospital (V) in 1990. Graduating with MBBS in 1990, he then went onto pass his surgical exams achieving FRCSEd in 1995.
During this time he spent periods in British Military Hospital Rinteln and Iserlohn. Higher Surgical Training in the Northern Region ensued with a research thesis looking into varicose veins culminating in an MD (Newcastle) in 2003. That year also saw him complete his training by passing the intercollegiate surgical exam gaining FRCS(Gen Surg). In the Territorial Army he assumed the second-in-commands (2IC) post at 251 (Sunderland) Field Ambulance (V) and deployed with the unit to Bosnia and Kosovo for 6 months as the Officer Commanding Hosp Sqn, Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo and the Medical Regimental 2IC.
In 2004 he was appointed Consultant & Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Vascular Surgery at City Hospitals Sunderland, delivering an acute vascular service for 450,000 patients and also being responsible for the delivery of undergraduate surgical education. 2007 saw him deploy to Afghanistan for 3 months on Op HERRICK 7A and again in 2010 for 2 months on Op Herrick 13A.
During this time he studied and achieved a Diploma in Management Development, been awarded an FRCSEng Ad Eundum, as well as becoming a regular feature at Army Medical Services Training Centre on HOSPEX and course lead on Military Operational Surgical Training passing on the lessons learnt to successively deploying Field Hospitals. 2012 saw him boarded twice, firstly as the Regimental 2IC with effect from November of that year, secondly, he became the first Reservist officer to be deployed at the rank of Colonel in the position of the Deployed Medical Director of the Role 3 Hospital, Camp Bastion, Afghanistan on Op Herrick 18A. Col Banerjee was recognised for his role in the Reserves regionally being appointed as Deputy Lieutenant to the Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear in November 2014 and also nationally in the 2015 New Years honours list being awarded QVRM.
Col Ben Banerjee assumed Command of 201 (Northern) Field Hospital on 5 October 2015. His time in command at 201 has seen the Unit reach full recruitment and win accolades for infantry, sporting and healthcare performance. He has also raised over £2500 for Combat Stress, a military mental health charity along with significant contributions to the Army Benevolent Fund. He is currently Deputy Commander Reserves South supporting 5 reserve Field Hospitals and the Brigade.
Col Banerjee is married to Helen with two children, Luke and Jasmine. He is a keen fitness fanatic regularly running with or without his bergen.

John joined the Board as Secretary in 2012, having been a beneficiary of the charity when he received therapy support in 2011. He is ex-forces and currently works as a gas engineer for a eco-power plant company. He is also a director of the Enterprise.

Saul joined the Board in 2019. He has expert knowledge on web-based marketing and GDPR compliance.
Commander Linda Cairney brings over three decades of service from the Royal Navy to her role as Trustee at Veterans At Ease. With a career spanning engineering and training management, she currently serves as the Naval Assistant to the First Sea Lord. Linda holds an MBA and has been recognised with numerous awards, including a Vice Chief of the Defence Staff Commendation in the 2020 New Year’s Honours.
Beyond her naval duties, Linda is passionate about sports leadership and mentorship. She chairs the Royal Navy and UK Armed Forces Netball Associations and has coached both teams, demonstrating her commitment to fostering teamwork and excellence. A strong advocate for diversity and inclusion, Linda has actively mentored women in defence, supporting their professional growth and leadership development.
Her extensive experience in risk management, strategic planning, and governance, combined with her dedication to supporting veterans’ mental health, makes her a valuable asset to Veterans At Ease.
